1. Heritage Centre to the green
Begin at Ditton Heritage Centre on New Road. The former schoolroom is itself part of the story: built for Victorian children and later adapted to preserve the village’s history.
Cross towards St Peter’s Church and pause on the village green. Imagine a larger, uneven space, with quarry hollows, a pond and buildings connected with parish welfare. The green offers the clearest introduction to Ditton’s historic core.
2. Church, stream and ford
Explore the exterior of St Peter’s Church and look for the different phases of stonework. Continue with the churchyard boundary on your left and turn towards the ford.
Here the Bradbourne Stream, old cottages and the road crossing create one of the village’s most atmospheric views. Please remain on public routes and take care near water and moving vehicles.
3. London Road and New Road
From the ford, routes lead towards Streamside and the site of Ditton Place, or back towards London Road. On the A20, historic clues include the war memorial and early milepost. The traffic is much heavier than the coaches that once followed the turnpike, so use recognised crossings.
Return by New Road, laid out in 1870. Its surviving Victorian houses help tell the story of Ditton’s expansion away from the old village centre. The walk ends back at the Heritage Centre, where photographs and artefacts add detail to the places seen outside.
